Study: More People are Turning to the Web for Political Info

Mon, 16 Jun 2008 12:04:16 PDT
A new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project reveals that 46% of Americans have used the Internet, email, or text messaging to get or share election information this year. 35% have watched online political videos -- triple the number that watched video online in 2004, while 39%, according to the study, have turned to the web for "unfiltered" campaign information, such as raw video or transcripts of speeches and debates. But Americans aren't convinced that all this social media bu

As you know, I've been following the cotton crop for the past three years in the It All Starts Here series. This year, my plans were thwarted when the acreage was bought by another concern who decided to plant corn rather than cotton. Wahhh! Foiled, I thought the agricultural series was doomed but then I realized that the trend of rising prices for corn causing cotton acreage to shrink was important considering rising costs of energy. First an update to the local field. It was being irrigat

The Forgotten Guest Book

Mon, 16 Jun 2008 12:08:00 PDT
Source While scrounging around for some unmemorable item a few years ago in the basement of my father’s house, I came across my parents’ guest book from their wedding in the back of a hallway closet. The thick layer of dust that caked the cover confirmed my suspicion — the book had not seen the light of day in over thirty years. As I flipped through the pages and pages of names, I was surprised to recognize a majority of the names — many of whom were relatives or friends of my parents. Als

Fresh Salad

Mon, 16 Jun 2008 12:14:41 PDT
We don’t mention McDonald’s too much on this blog (aside from a few snide comments here and there), but a new billboard in Chicago - masterminded by Micky D’s ad agency Leo Burnett - recently got our attention. To promote McDonalds’ “Fresh” Salads, they let lettuce (yes, the real stuff) grow from the sign for three weeks to spell out “Fresh Salad.” We have to admit– a very original take on a timeless, and otherwise plain vanilla advertising medium. We’re not asking you to eat there, but anyone

Ranting on America’s missing infrastructure

Mon, 16 Jun 2008 12:17:01 PDT
A brief rant on the the New York Times article Charging by the Byte to Curb Internet Traffic. For years, both kinds of Web surfers have paid the same price for access. But now three of the country’s largest Internet service providers are threatening to clamp down on their most active subscribers by placing monthly limits on their online activity. One of them, Time Warner Cable, began a trial of “Internet metering” in one Texas city early this month, asking customers to select a monthly pla

Working with an Expert vs. DIY SEO

Mon, 16 Jun 2008 12:18:14 PDT
Like many areas in web development, there is a long-standing argument whether it is better to learn and practice SEO or if it is better to outsource this task to professionals. There are advantages and disadvantages on both sides and it is important to weigh these aspects against each other before making the final decision. Advantages of working with an Expert · Diverse experience – professionals have several years of SEO experience so they know what to expect from search engines as t

Style Swap: Go For Faux And Let Real Coral Thrive

Mon, 16 Jun 2008 12:19:06 PDT
You don't wear fur because you think it's cruel to animals, but do you wear coral? Coral's an animal, too, you know (nope, it's not a rock like its complementary friend turquoise.) According to the coral-protection group Too Precious To Wear, corals are vital to marine life—they provide other aquatic life with food, safe haven from predators, and a secure place to mate. So wearing coral jewelry, as beautiful as it may be, is tantamount to wearing fur—detrimental to animals, and your wallet.

With regard to online video, you haven’t seen nothing yet

Mon, 16 Jun 2008 12:30:01 PDT
Take this one from whence it came: A new report from Cisco predicting that online video will jump to 50% of all data transfers by 2012 (from 30% by the end of this year). Cisco, the biggest maker of equipment used to deliver data through the Web, serves up several other nuggets on consumer and business Internet Protocol (IP) networking trends. If these numbers hold up, does this mean in the future everyone will have their own online-video show with a total of 15 viewers? Related PostNo Related

Quote of the day: Rob Walker

Mon, 16 Jun 2008 13:11:11 PDT
Marie and I went to the PSFK mini-event on Friday celebrating Rob Walker's new book Buying In. He brings home some of the key issues connected to what we do here at our little planning shop. The importance of culture - understanding it is key to how brands will need to grow in this new era. He also shared a great impromptu quote that reflects some of my own caution when it comes to some of the technology hyperbole in post-dot-com-thinking...referring to the impact of social networks...
